IDC Herzliya Students & African Migrants Praise Israel for being So Welcoming!


After an intense backlash, with critics accusing the government of racism, Jerusalem withdrew the deportation order but has resisted calls to grant refugee status to the migrants on a case-by-case basis. The situation remains in limbo. Despite these hardships, the three guests at Central Synagogue — Usumain Baraka, a graduate student in public policy at Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya (IDC), the largest private college in Israel; Monim Haroun, a student at Hebrew University; and Taj Haroon, an IDC graduate pursuing a master’s degree at Tel Aviv University and president of the African Student Organization (asoisrael.org) — praised Israelis for being so welcoming to them.

Meet Our Alumnus of the Month!

Mishael Zohar, MD. MBA.

Mishael is a Medical doctor who studied for his GMBA at IDC Herzliya during his last years in med school. He is also the founder & CEO of Orion.ID – a startup company who develops and designs medical applications that creates remote preventive medicine using mobile technology for better mental health management.

Prior to establishing Orion.ID Mishael was a Co-Founder at M-TACS. ltd – a company that provides tactical medical solutions services – consulting, training and equipment, to security companies, strategic facilities and special forces units worldwide

Mishael served as an officer, (Captain), at the elite unit of the Military Intelligence Directorate of Israel.

As a hobby Mishael is a marathon runner - Berlin, Stockholm and Rotterdam marathons, and likes to sail - Skipper license, Sailing club member.

Assaf Wand IDC Herzliya class of 2002

Hippo, a Mountain View, CA-based "insurtech" (insurance technology) startup, considers the insurance industry to be particularly ripe for disruption. Cumbersome processes, slow response times, and a lack of transparency have dragged down customer engagement at many legacy players in the industry, in the view of  Assaf Wand, Hippo's co-founder and CEO, whom I interview below. According to Wand, who was previously the founder of Sabi, a collaboration with designer Yves Behar, and has been a consultant with McKinsey and an investor with Intel Capital, Hippo has created a "tech-informed but human-enhanced" model that Wand feels represents the insurance industry future.
